Brief Synopsis
DPP | Portimão Percussion Days is a music festival held annually since 2020 in Portimão, western Algarve, Portugal, with a strong motus on the decentralization of performance arts. With a careful commitment to the promotion of Percussion as a universal artistic and musical language of union and dialogue, DPP brings together local, national and international musicians who dwell around the fantastic world of percussion, promoting concerts, masterclasses, workshops and parades, during 3 intense days. DPP is a project by the cultural association O Corvo and Raposa, co-financed by the Portuguese Republic / Directorate-General for the Arts and having the Municipality of Portimão as a strategic partner.

Synopsis Last Edition (2022)
This edition will bring to Portimão artists such as Simantra Grupo de Percussão & Luís Figueiredo (Portugal), Vincent Houdijk (vibraphone, Netherlands), Eixo do Jazz Ensemble (Portugal), Bomboémia (Portuguese-Brazilian percussion, Portugal) and guest musicians Tiago Manuel Soares (adufe, Portugal), Iago Fernández (drums, Galicia) and Sérgio Almeida (African percussion, Portugal).

The challenging proposal of DPP'22 is the dialogue between the artists residing in the Algarve region, namely the students of the Integrated Music Course and the Jazz Instrumentalist Course of the Bemposta Schools Group and AGP - Algarve Contemporary Percussion Group, extending this sharing to the general public, residents and visitors.

This year's program includes 3 concerts with a varied program linked to the world of percussion: traditional, jazz and contemporary music, from the 9th to 11th of September. We highlight the musical commission for DPP'22 to the composer Luís Figueiredo (musical arrangement “Amar dos Dois”, Eurovision 2017), which will premiere work for Piano, Adufe and Percussion Ensemble, with Tiago Manuel Soares and Simantra Grupo de Percussion, as well as the public presentation of the artistic residency of the Dutch artist Vincent Houdijk (Academy of Music and Performing Arts, Tilburg, Netherlands) together with the AGP - Algarve Contemporary Percussion Group.

DPP’22 also promotes an online talk as a pre-event theme, under the theme Contemporary Percussion in Portugal: Creation, Programming, Mediation. The conversation will be mediated by the festival's artistic direction, with the participation of festival artists and guest programmers, such as Tiago Ferreira (FIPA - North Percussion Festival) and Diana Ferreira (FIP - Itinerary Percussion Festival).

From a pedagogical perspective and direct involvement with the community, the festival also offers a parallel programme for children and young people with 2 masterclasses: Vincent Houdijk (Vibraphone / “The Inner Ear”) and Iago Fernández (Drums), as well as 3 percussion workshops with the musicians Tiago Manuel Soares (adufe and trancanholas), Simantra Grupo de Percussion (recycled garbage) and Sérgio Almeida (African percussion).

The most festive and relaxed tone is ensured with the holding of a jam session at Sociedade Vencedora Portimonense on the opening day of the festival, in collaboration with O Eixo do Jazz Ensemble, the Integrated Music Course and the Jazz Instrumental Course of the Bemposta Schools Group, Portimão.

Throughout the festival, there will be some parades held in public space, with Bomboémia (University of Minho Percussion Group) returning to Portimão to fill the city's streets with colour, sound and rhythm.

DPP'22 will be held in the city of Portimão and in constant articulation with public facilities, including the Big Auditorium and Black Box of TEMPO – Municipal Theater of Portimão, Auditorium of the Museum of Portimão, Garden 1º de Dezembro, Sociedade Vencedora Portimonense, and in dialogue with public spaces: Historical Center of Portimão, Riverside Area and Center of Alvor.

DPP’22 is a project by O Corvo and Raposa, co-financed by the Portuguese Republic / Directorate-General for the Arts and having the Municipality of Portimão as a strategic partner.
