Festival d'Avignon

Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d'Avignon is today one of the most important international events for contemporary performing arts. Every year in July, Avignon becomes a theatre-city, transforming its architectural heritage into a variety of majestic or astonishing performance venues, welcoming tens of thousands of theatre lovers of all generations. The Festival succeeds in bringing together a popular audience with international creation. Avignon is also a mindset: the city is an open-air forum, where festival-goers talk about the shows and share their experiences as spectators. For one month, everyone can have access to a contemporary and lively culture.

The programme consists of performances, but also readings, exhibitions, films and debates, all of which provide an insight into the world of the invited artists and intellectuals. Every evening at the Festival, there are one or more "premieres", which make Avignon a real place of creation and adventure, for artists and spectators alike.

The directors of the Festival d'Avignon are appointed by the board of directors, with the joint and formal agreement of the Mayor of Avignon and the Minister of Culture. Since Jean Vilar, the director has enjoyed total freedom in the choice of programme. All public authorities have always respected this independence of action, whatever the political situation.

Fondé en 1947 par Jean Vilar, le Festival d'Avignon est aujourd'hui l'une des plus importantes manifestations internationales du spectacle vivant contemporain. Chaque année, en juillet, Avignon devient une ville-théâtre, transformant son patrimoine architectural en divers lieux de représentation, majestueux ou étonnants, accueillant des dizaines de milliers d'amoureux du théâtre de toutes les générations. Le Festival réussit l'alliance originale d'un public populaire avec la création internationale. Avignon, c'est également un esprit : la ville est un forum à ciel ouvert, où les festivaliers parlent des spectacles et partagent leurs expériences de spectateurs. Un mois durant, tous peuvent avoir accès à une culture contemporaine et vivante.

Le programme est composé de spectacles, mais aussi de lectures, d'expositions, de films et de débats, qui sont autant d'entrées dans l'univers des artistes et intellectuels invités. Il y a, chaque soir au Festival, une ou plusieurs « premières », qui font d'Avignon un véritable lieu de créations et d'aventures, pour les artistes comme pour les spectateurs.

Les directeurs du Festival d'Avignon sont nommés par le conseil d'administration, avec l'accord conjoint et formel du maire d'Avignon et du ministre de la Culture. Depuis Jean Vilar, le directeur bénéficie de la plus totale liberté dans le choix du programme. Toutes les tutelles publiques ont toujours respecté cette indépendance d'action, quelles qu'aient été les situations politiques.
