Review of Puppet Theatres

The International Review of Puppet Theatres has grown into a manifestation of exceptional quality during its 27 years of existence which has, time and time again, gathered respected puppeteers and puppet performances from Croatia and abroad. In the course of more than two decades, the Review has hosted over 700 performances from some of the best theatres from Croatia and all around the world and today still holds its place as a cultural pillar of the City of Rijeka and its dynamic cultural scene. The organizer, Rijeka City Puppet Theatre holds its important position in the cultural life of Rijeka by persistently researching, comparing, questioning and challenging puppetry today and is also doing so by hosting the Review and other activities. The Review sets high-quality standards which push the art of puppetry to high levels. The first week of November marks the traditional annual beginning of the Review and has become a long-term point of encounter between Croatian and foreign puppetry. The Review doesn't offer only content for children but also some of programmes for adult audiences. Each Review creates and opportunity for collaboration and expanding artistic horizons between Croatia and other countries from around the world. Different performances that vary in aesthetics and genre offer us new puppetry techniques and a chance to observe skilful puppeteers who use their animation art to breathe life into their puppets. During the years the Review has been a meeting point for different puppetry schools and traditions, languages, cultures and trends in this art field.

The Review also holds a very important educational dimension. Regular workshops for children are organized as a part of the programme every year as well as many exhibitions which always involve the art of puppetry and theatre.
